Brass Band Association Yorkshire & Humberside

Annual Open Brass Band Contest

Sunday, 1st November saw the return of the Yorkshire and Humberside Brass Band Association Annual Contest after a break of some 10 years. The Civic Hall, Holmfirth was the venue and the sun shone to welcome bands from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Teesside

to the last of the summer wine country.

Late withdrawals were a cause for disappointment but 7 bands competed in good atmosphere and provided the appreciative audience with 7 different test pieces and 7 different hymns.

On behalf of the association Peggy Tomlinson, President YHBBA, thanked all concerned for their participation and for supporting the association in their effort to re-establish this event in the banding calendar. Thanks were also given to Geneva Instruments for their valued sponsorship in providing the services of one of their artistes to act as soloist in a concert or to give a master class for winners of each group. Mr John Roberts was adjudicator for the day.

Gary Hallas writes:

“The return of the YHBBA Annual Contest saw 7 bands take to the stage at Holmfirth Civic Hall on Sunday November 1st.
In Group B North Skelton Band took top honours and their Soprano player picked up the best Instrumentalists award, NSB also picked up the best hymn award too! Just behind them were Stalybridge Old band who picked up 2nd place overall and Best 4th section band prize money. Otley Brass Band played in their first ever test piece contest picking up 3rd overall and the best non-contesting prize too.
Group A saw a very close contest at the top, Hade Edge picked up Best Instrumentalist along with best hymn, but were just pipped to top spot by Elland Silver Band who took overall honours, best 1st section band and Group winners. In 3rd place were Ripon Band, with Eccleston in 4th collecting the Best 2nd section trophy!
It's always tough getting a new contest off the ground, thanks today go to our sponsors Geneva Instruments, all the bands who turned up support today's new event and to Peggy Tomlinson who has worked tirelessly to create a new event for Yorkshire banding after many bands & bandsmen said they wanted a local event.

So, here's to next year, we'll keep you posted on the details as soon as we've got them sorted.”
